Indonesia Charcoal Briquette Exports Continue to Rise Year After Year
Indonesia's coconut charcoal briquette industry has experienced consistent and significant growth over the past few years, positioning itself as one of the top global players in the export of eco-friendly solid fuels. According to data compiled from Badan Pusat Statistik (BPS), ITC Trade Map, and trade publications from the Ministry of Trade of the Republic of Indonesia, the export volume and value of charcoal briquettes have increased steadily from 2021 through 2023—and this upward trend is projected to continue through 2024 and into 2025.
In 2021, Indonesia exported approximately 514,000 metric tons of charcoal briquettes with a total export value of around 320 million USD. This number increased in 2022 to an estimated 572,000 metric tons, valued at approximately 355 million USD. By the end of 2023, the export volume had reached roughly 608,000 metric tons, generating close to 390 million USD in revenue. Early estimates for 2024 suggest that Indonesia could exceed 640,000 metric tons, and if current growth trends persist, the country may reach or surpass 680,000 metric tons of exports by the end of 2025.
This consistent growth is driven by rising global demand for clean, renewable, and sustainable fuel alternatives, particularly for shisha and BBQ use. Indonesian coconut charcoal briquettes are renowned for their premium quality—offering low ash content, long burn duration, smokeless combustion, and no odor. These characteristics are ideal for consumers in the Middle East, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and increasingly, the Americas.
The United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar remain the primary export destinations for Indonesian charcoal briquettes, due to the dominance of shisha culture in these regions. However, demand is also rising rapidly in countries such as Germany, the Netherlands, South Korea, Brazil, and Australia. This indicates that Indonesian charcoal is no longer seen merely as a commodity but as a high-value alternative energy product that aligns with global environmental and lifestyle trends.
Despite this momentum, the industry still faces ongoing challenges. These include raw material shortages, fluctuations in coconut shell supply, price competition from other producing countries, and inconsistent export regulations. To ensure sustainable growth, stakeholders are urging stronger government support—particularly in protecting raw materials from over-export, providing export incentives to small and medium producers, and expanding international trade outreach.

With global interest in clean energy sources on the rise, Indonesia is well-positioned to strengthen its role as a world leader in premium coconut charcoal briquette exports.
