Coconut Charcoal Industry on the Brink: ASBRINTARA Urges Immediate Ban on Whole Coconut Exports

Charcoal Newsroom — Indonesia’s coconut charcoal industry is raising serious concerns over the continuous surge in whole coconut exports, a move that is threatening the sustainability of domestic coconut-based manufacturing. On May 8, 2025, the Indonesian Coconut Briquette Association (ASBRINTARA) officially met with the Minister of Trade to demand an immediate moratorium on whole coconut exports.

A Crisis of Supply for Local Industry

Denni Fauzi, Chairman of ASBRINTARA, stated after the meeting that the soaring export numbers have resulted in a critical shortage of raw materials for downstream coconut product manufacturers, including charcoal briquette producers.

“This has reached an urgent stage. The survival of coconut-based industries is under serious threat and could lead to mass layoffs involving tens of thousands of workers,” Denni explained.

ASBRINTARA highlights that while exporting coconuts might benefit farmers in the short term due to higher prices abroad, the long-term risks of unregulated exports could be devastating for the national economy and employment.

“We understand the importance of exports for farmers' welfare because of the higher prices, but we also ask the government to consider the long-term consequences of uncontrolled whole coconut exports,” Denni added.

Industry Shutdowns Looming

The shortage of raw materials has already forced many downstream industries to scale down or halt production. ASBRINTARA reports that these challenges have persisted since January, and the situation continues to worsen.

“If the moratorium is not imposed immediately, I can't imagine what will happen next month. Thousands of downstream coconut industries could collapse, and tens of thousands of workers will be laid off,” Denni warned.

The association calls on the government to take swift and decisive action to protect a sector that contributes significantly to Indonesia’s export economy — particularly in high-value products like coconut shell charcoal for shisha and BBQ.
